<br />
Line Orc #6, Skuzza, is such a nippy player that his photo was really blurry, so he is missing. There's nothing like putting them up next to each other to note the identical poses, eh? I've tried to vary the paint schemes enough, sticking within the palette, to make them distinctive.<br />
<br />
Will try to snap a couple of action shots next time they take to the field!<br />

Waaagh!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/blood-bowl-humans.html" target="_blank">Andy Lawhammer - coach of the the Salzenmund Seahawks </a> is running things, and we kicked off on Sunday with a few friendlies. The New Orcland Hate-riots scored a 3-0 loss to the elven Laurelorn Lions - though we won on casualties! - and a hard fought 1-1 draw against the Rune Forged dwarves.<br />
<br />
This spurred me on to paint up my ladz - albeit quickly - and here are the first batch: the heavy hitters:<br />

<i>That's right, Sports fans! Jim and Bob here with exciting news.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Not 'arf Jim! New season, new signings: exciting times ahead for Blood Bowl! </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
So Games Workshop released <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Blood-Bowl-2016-ENG" target="_blank">a new version of Blood Bowl</a>. It's no secret I'm a fan. I've had many teams over the years, from the ill-starred Black Water Bad Boys, to the surprisingly successful San Fernando Gold Diggers. So when <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Andy Lawhammer</a> got the new game for his birthday, a new league was on the cards.<br />
<br />
I picked up a set this week, and I've decided to go for an Orc team this season. As with my poorly converted and scarcely fielded <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/skaven-blood-bowl-team-finished-kind-of.html" target="_blank">Marienburg Stealers,</a> NFL team puns are a must for Blood Bowl teams. I rattled through a few options, before settling on...<br />
<br />
The New Orcland Hate-Riots.<br />
<br />
Now, I'm doing this on my iPad, and Blogger hates iPads, so all the pictures will follow this text dump. :)<br />
<br />
I've only painted the one lineman for now, as a proof of concept, but I like the look. Went for the Patriots' rough colour scheme: blue torso, silver/grey helmet and legs, with red and white detailing. I went for a lighter blue, because Blood Bowl, and I improvised the axe-logo to add a splash of red and white to the shoulders.<br />
<br />
All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the look. Will try to get some more painted this week, so the Hate-Riots can take to the field, resplendent in their livery.<br />
<br />

<br />
A measly unit of 10 archers, mind, but a unit nonetheless. And that takes me to three units in total. That deserves a Xander happy dance!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As I have <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/update.html" target="_blank">mentioned before, </a>I like the detail on the archer models, and decided to include lots of little, characterful things like turnips, rats, rabbits an dead birds hanging from the archers' belts. It struck me that they'd likely be hunters, poachers even, and would probaly serve as foragers too (though whether officially or not may depend on the leniency of their liege-lord!).<br />
<br />
With every archer down, I grew less enamoured with the fiddly bits, although once they were done, I do like the rag-tag look of them. Have a gander:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIz4guCfl7OskzUOsCus5mGHVOuGeF-f8G60m0e7tqItbe-QelypSFt1sZAgzVPuGJxpekjSPNKLlSGtNcdj471cOicoJLRmMd1YV-cBl1x5h__hgdEm1YTHDfM2LTX0ne-0DehTjSLiE/s1600/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+17+46+23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIz4guCfl7OskzUOsCus5mGHVOuGeF-f8G60m0e7tqItbe-QelypSFt1sZAgzVPuGJxpekjSPNKLlSGtNcdj471cOicoJLRmMd1YV-cBl1x5h__hgdEm1YTHDfM2LTX0ne-0DehTjSLiE/s320/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+17+46+23.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Go on, charge us. I dare you!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My only issue with them is the two guys on the left. The command bodies from the Bret. men at arms boxes are really distinctive, and the two here both have relatively decent armour, considering they're supposedly peasant scum. I've tried to cover some of it with colour, but I'm still not loving them.<br />
<br />
The Ninth Age rules currently have a bowmen upgrade - Brigands - that may be worth taking though, and I could see them fitting that type of unit, I suppose. Maybe their armour was looted from fallen enemies?<br />
<br />
In addition to finishing the archers, I also finished the missing man at arms, taking that to a properly legal unit of 20:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR3461YcuFUsGd8M3ChpEVjLCKKcBkSaElWNdhJ6xwa4oj6ZDaurYA6-DdQQIhsoTFdWXKkcRKCDyPGMW6PxgIH65G5nLdVfTbwOdzgtgsAEE5tr4Br-9l6aWai9BhsdnNEYUR0dsd6t4/s1600/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+19+57+42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR3461YcuFUsGd8M3ChpEVjLCKKcBkSaElWNdhJ6xwa4oj6ZDaurYA6-DdQQIhsoTFdWXKkcRKCDyPGMW6PxgIH65G5nLdVfTbwOdzgtgsAEE5tr4Br-9l6aWai9BhsdnNEYUR0dsd6t4/s320/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+19+57+42.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Better late than never!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So all in, that's three minimum strength units down. I've got 3 more knights in progress, and a base-coated/washed Damsel to finish. And I'll be assembling some mounted yeomen and Knights Aspirant too.<br />
<br />
Here's my little warband as is:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzR-yAQNbpKA7EisHCNuFvMH-XX65pV_P_hqgb343yzeJWgXTvFe4EOajI-I7OxEYc7VWV0Ut7koEIT0uIDi-1-Ks-wKnXCZ3lkQ5UUCaM6_esggWLUYqw2h8CRNqwNrb0Xzsyx4VCFA/s1600/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+19+58+30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzR-yAQNbpKA7EisHCNuFvMH-XX65pV_P_hqgb343yzeJWgXTvFe4EOajI-I7OxEYc7VWV0Ut7koEIT0uIDi-1-Ks-wKnXCZ3lkQ5UUCaM6_esggWLUYqw2h8CRNqwNrb0Xzsyx4VCFA/s640/Photo+16-05-2016%252C+19+58+30.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Three, count 'em, three whole units!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now I just need to pin down <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Andy Lawhammer</a> for a game!<br />
Vonbloodbathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07301222468047181564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651938978924680817.post-3498291653698165402016-05-06T18:29:00.001+01:002016-05-06T18:31:08.668+01:00Knights of the RealmI've finally completed my first five Knights of the Realm. The fifth one was another I foolishly sprayed white, so it took longer and was more fiddly than I'd have liked. I'm quite happy with him, though my attempt to paint round the edges of the transfer has, if anything, made it more obvious. D'oh!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUv9LPwfwSpJ7ISn7NblXZ13KApTdl5Ov6dB-94IZSUBB7KYF2XjEvPTgrzm2kQtI5wnqTivLvYRWy5Gu5xlpoGpr6WiE2i_HLJ_v21NiFFLfOdcyizpQOSLfGHAUcrRD319sSpQhi1kE/s640/blogger-image-2132543463.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUv9LPwfwSpJ7ISn7NblXZ13KApTdl5Ov6dB-94IZSUBB7KYF2XjEvPTgrzm2kQtI5wnqTivLvYRWy5Gu5xlpoGpr6WiE2i_HLJ_v21NiFFLfOdcyizpQOSLfGHAUcrRD319sSpQhi1kE/s640/blogger-image-2132543463.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I deliberately didn't over highlight, as I could easily have spent ages on it. But I want big units of Knights, and if I spend weeks on each one that won't happen! I'll spend longer on characters and command, of course, but I need to keep the rank and file to just this level of super-quick highlighting. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So all together, that's five, if I count the 'champion' as such. Once I have more done, he'll be a Paladin/Duke though. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Quite happy with them. I plan to be a bit more adventurous with colours on the next batch, maybe start some split fields, etc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Already primed are three more KoR (including a standard bearer) and 6 archers to finish that unit off too. I also have a mounted damsel that is base coated and washed, which I'm working on in fits and starts. Next post will hopefully be three full units and a damsel. </div>

This one had a white undercoat, which was really useful...for reminding me why I don't use a white undercoat! Seriously! So fiddly! <div><br></div><div>Anyway, he's done now, and I'm quite happy. The transfer on his shield - but not his boarding, weirdly - is really prominent, i.e. You can see the 'clear' bit around the design. Not sure why, but I may go back and paint blend it in. Or I may not. Have to keep reminding myself he's not a character! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMoq1I9yF2RASVD419a7pArdSvqO6Jlrbo1jkZ-w75g3yNHEXNCYTBST7Qk9ugWQv7MDoc-J6HzzScYzu3tRNDv9p5EfFVFaySZUfP2_Qq2SucaFQL6_wEJ7WAiyEoBfIR-dVcLy0QvLo/s640/blogger-image-692271770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMoq1I9yF2RASVD419a7pArdSvqO6Jlrbo1jkZ-w75g3yNHEXNCYTBST7Qk9ugWQv7MDoc-J6HzzScYzu3tRNDv9p5EfFVFaySZUfP2_Qq2SucaFQL6_wEJ7WAiyEoBfIR-dVcLy0QvLo/s640/blogger-image-692271770.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I have another knight almost base coated, and a mounted damsel too. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With the demise of 8th Edition, the discontinuation of Bretonnian miniatures by GW, and the birth of Age of Sigmar (yuck!), I had little inclination to forge ahead with my Bretonnian army. So they gathered dust, and my paints dried up in their pots. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then, a conversation with my good chum Andy <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Lawhammer</a>, turned to Warhammer, and we discussed playing with older versions of the rules. I mean...why not, right? But as we rattled through the different editions, they all presented problems...too imbalanced, missing rules...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then Andy told me about <a href="http://www.the-ninth-age.com/" target="_blank">The 9th Age,</a> a community based update of 8th Edition. A quick perusal of the <a href="http://www.the-ninth-age.com/index.php?simple-page/" target="_blank">rules</a> and <a href="http://www.the-ninth-age.com/index.php?board-list/" target="_blank">forum</a>, and I was sold. Next day, I broke out the paints. :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm no longer collecting Bretonnians, it's the Kingdom of Equitaine now.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll post again soon, to discuss army lists, but for now, here's a pic of my expanded Men at Arms unit - technically a peasant levy now. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicTOjZdrbeDghrwYRQ9fyyA9sHlKUxXW6v_05IIlZ0PC1LMUEUHdYI3Sjy1doDLZrrKNcvGYGFhBaW9V7qmT73k6agHhNoLL7VRwrHnyWbu7VjlIQgEiKtdm67CqeM0PxPwnXC9FVhqCU/s640/blogger-image--266074843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicTOjZdrbeDghrwYRQ9fyyA9sHlKUxXW6v_05IIlZ0PC1LMUEUHdYI3Sjy1doDLZrrKNcvGYGFhBaW9V7qmT73k6agHhNoLL7VRwrHnyWbu7VjlIQgEiKtdm67CqeM0PxPwnXC9FVhqCU/s640/blogger-image--266074843.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had to give the standard bearer a bloody mark on his shield, as the transfer got knackered during placement. Frustratingly, I only have 19 here. I am sure I assembled 20, so I must have lost one somewhere. Under the T9A rules, I need 20 for a minimum unit. Luckily I have just got my grubby mitts in another battalion box, so I'll be able to round the unit out soon. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm working on two more KotR; next update when one/both are done!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXX-oU8QnhZZBhkNwED5FeEJJASeN7yz2tS50T0A941gXdYPp8D9qy5h17wwiTJ4LirZpfVGtCcBWTJfCV_bMNpsMfg137ySHE3DBvdeD-W1ZJMsZ3XWVq5_1r4WFbyGeuW-OrQqA_EY8/s1600/Men+At+Arms.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXX-oU8QnhZZBhkNwED5FeEJJASeN7yz2tS50T0A941gXdYPp8D9qy5h17wwiTJ4LirZpfVGtCcBWTJfCV_bMNpsMfg137ySHE3DBvdeD-W1ZJMsZ3XWVq5_1r4WFbyGeuW-OrQqA_EY8/s1600/Men+At+Arms.JPG" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was very pleased with how quick these were to do. Real army-painting stuff:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>spray black undercoat</li>
<li>drybrush model with Eshin Gray (using large drybrush)</li>
<li>paint metal areas with Ironbreaker</li>
<li>paint brown areas with Gorthor Brown</li>
<li>paint flesh areas with Cadian Flesh</li>
<li>give detail areas a wash with Agrax Earthshade</li>
<li>give detail areas a one stage highlight with base-coat (Ironbreaker, Gorthor or Cadian)</li>
<li>add transfers to shields</li>
<li>tidy up</li>
<li>base</li>
</ol>
<div>
And you're done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Really quick;having the single wash for all detail colours helps speed things up, as does the black base, which means I don't have to be too neat with the wash. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have to give more props to Geoff at <a href="http://www.citadelsix.co.uk/" target="_blank">CitadelSix Custom Design</a> who did the transfers. They tie the unit together brilliantly, and there's something nice about seeing my family crest on all those shields!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I was assembling these, I was really pleased with the champion's pose, thrusting his halberd over his shield-rest.Very cool. Then I tried to rank them up. D'oh! Still, it just about works. :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next knight is about 60% done - the white undercoat is making it all look messy, so it's taking longer. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next update when he's done, unless my resolve goes and I do the next 10 men at arms. I am really pleased with the poses for the musician and standard bearer. </div>
<div>
<br />VBB</div>

I have another knight on the go (man, I'd forgotten how much I hate painting over a white undercoat!), and I decided to finish the 4 archers I had on the go, before I started on the men at arms.<br>
<br>
So I now have 4 painted archers. Not a legal unit, but a start!apologies for the dim 'n' dingy photos, but for some reason the flash on the camera I'm using won't always fire when I tell it to. <br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMTRUo2EbILgZy6XJbLEcdErREj6qnKrLYbh7iRJ6FzgxJzQEttUyrI2oEF5WUVxvVEZr2IGOQlaLj1ifKApL7PmF735P9n8HKQ7NQnT6_y7effZoEru_YwOir4aV31TrQxAdRWHQ9Oto/s1600/DSC00875.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMTRUo2EbILgZy6XJbLEcdErREj6qnKrLYbh7iRJ6FzgxJzQEttUyrI2oEF5WUVxvVEZr2IGOQlaLj1ifKApL7PmF735P9n8HKQ7NQnT6_y7effZoEru_YwOir4aV31TrQxAdRWHQ9Oto/s1600/DSC00875.JPG" height="202" width="320"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Above is the 4 archers, with defensive stake & brazier. Originally I was going to try and paint the coals all orange and glowing - and I may still go back to add that in - but when I was painting them it did occur to me that it's when there's the white ash on the coals that a barbecue is at its hottest...</div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOQJBRT0MoCr4NacVukPn0vXQ82XtZeoaGjDOcZjdmSy23w6SWXd3ohRJ0mHHr1XdNABs4Ri4tdutWhV6bEn7FddGgNzO9dOwfN0yRRHbPrZmdC7nwneGHyLhV4dpQxVgz1B4ZyjaNKKc/s1600/DSC00876.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOQJBRT0MoCr4NacVukPn0vXQ82XtZeoaGjDOcZjdmSy23w6SWXd3ohRJ0mHHr1XdNABs4Ri4tdutWhV6bEn7FddGgNzO9dOwfN0yRRHbPrZmdC7nwneGHyLhV4dpQxVgz1B4ZyjaNKKc/s1600/DSC00876.JPG" height="320" width="251"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've stuck with blue for the small shields, as these archers all form part of the retinue of my battle standard bearer (photo of him below...). I decided not to do a freehand little boar, as I'm already spending more time on these models than their measly points value can justify!</div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsfeAXZecLchPnk-NhqN3PRDQqXWWK8cc39OcjUs-cIdSC6Y4aJcf1JjBCoyBqF8Srouj7dhk4oVzYbIASz8chRbSrlLJOjhudrpTwKXABd7oQDasmUUD5eE9pMc0vfTdFz6q8pMwQjE/s1600/DSC00877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsfeAXZecLchPnk-NhqN3PRDQqXWWK8cc39OcjUs-cIdSC6Y4aJcf1JjBCoyBqF8Srouj7dhk4oVzYbIASz8chRbSrlLJOjhudrpTwKXABd7oQDasmUUD5eE9pMc0vfTdFz6q8pMwQjE/s1600/DSC00877.JPG" height="320" width="203"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You may notice that they all have red hoods or jerkins; initially I included red as it was the only bright colour I had to hand, but I quite like the consistency. In my mind, it's the equivalent of a high vis jacket so they don't get shot by accident when on a hunting party. </div>

<br>
As I mentioned <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/men-at-arms.html" target="_blank">previously, I really like the detail on the plastic archers.</a> I've stuck with my initial instincts, and kept the men at arms devoid of any extra accoutrements, but I've laden the archers down with accessories. I like the concept of them as foragers for the army, so I have all the food items on their belts, representing them hunting en route to the battle. This chap has a rabbit, a rat, and a turnip all on his belt. I suspect the rabbit goes to the Knights, while rat + turnip = bowl of brown.<br>
<br>
I do have some issues with the command of the archers; I'll leave that moan for now, though.<br>
<br>
I also took a couple more photos today, first off the aforementioned standard bearer.<br>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did him last year - at the time I had a slight issue with the transfer, trying to heat dry it too quickly caused it to fog up, but it looks OK. He's got the De Lisque banner, so he could be an army standard bearer, or if I downgrade De Lisque to a paladin or unit champion, this could easily be a unit standard. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And speaking of De Lisque, here's a clearer picture of him too. </div>
<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglybMTkAmCvWMxSP_3Jj-uWaucEvmojgn7htVptZCksmkKS-7qG00eMNuUnS7q52Se2_1N-frxU77iU1kyqOYphSm4maZdO9qFei91JP4F8hsQORXG5tQ4sJ9MyhObQpQzyEVDeZXL7B8/s640/blogger-image-1600047227.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglybMTkAmCvWMxSP_3Jj-uWaucEvmojgn7htVptZCksmkKS-7qG00eMNuUnS7q52Se2_1N-frxU77iU1kyqOYphSm4maZdO9qFei91JP4F8hsQORXG5tQ4sJ9MyhObQpQzyEVDeZXL7B8/s640/blogger-image-1600047227.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br>
So that's my total thus far: 4 men at arms, 4 archers, 3 knights, including a hero/champion and standard bearer. So...no legal units, yet, let alone a legal army!<br>
<br>
The plan is to carry on plugging away at the knights, and to speed paint up my men at arms. Next update when I have at least 10 of them done. Or when I get this yellow-barded knight done. So probably the men at arms. ;)<br>

<br />
Down at Andy Lawhammer's last week we played a game of <a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/108722/dreadfleet" target="_blank">Dreadfleet</a>, which was quite a lot of fun. The mechanics were unnecessarily clumsy and it suffered a lot, for me, through comparison to FFG's excellent Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game (which I have been playing a lot. A lot.).<br />
<br />
But it was fun, and it was Warhammery. And, having sold off my Orcs and Goblins (for shelf-space and money to buy more TIE fighters!) my mind turned to my nascent Bretonnian force. A few days later, and I have another knight done.<br />
<br />
I present to you Robert De Cendres!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm happy with how he's turned out. What I'm enjoying about painting Bretonnians, as opposed to the Greenskins, is that I can paint differently. My men at arms I am army painting, very quickly. The bowmen get a little more attention. The Knights, as there are fewer of them, and they are larger, get a bit more. I've deliberately not over-highlighted the barding, as I really want the block of colour effect. I highlighted the crest a little more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll take some pictures of my Battle Standard Bearer (as I just realised I haven't done that yet) and get him up here soon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In terms of the future, I'll be speed painting up some more men at arms over this week, to get them up to a minimum unit size of 10, and working on another couple of Knights. I'm breaking out the dreaded white undercoat as I'm going to try some lighter barding colours for variety.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More soon!</div>

Very, very slowly burgeoning, but still.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAaWvVFERVA" target="_blank">Now, time for the peasants! </a><br />
<br />
I'm taking a little more time on the Knights, as I want each Knight of the realm to look reasonably impressive on their own, but I thought it would be good to paint up one man at arms and one archer.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2EE-93tP9kfnl3AtSaV7sj-JQno_79doSHcw6qO8gGJzUXvyKe4IqhDhGMdeCvJpedWrVftuSS7scXc_tRMpP8pEeUpYa9BJxYqurX3nqsoM8uf-kJ4ieyc7vcUY9AvRzPLA0dlymO0/s1600/Man-At-Arms2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2EE-93tP9kfnl3AtSaV7sj-JQno_79doSHcw6qO8gGJzUXvyKe4IqhDhGMdeCvJpedWrVftuSS7scXc_tRMpP8pEeUpYa9BJxYqurX3nqsoM8uf-kJ4ieyc7vcUY9AvRzPLA0dlymO0/s1600/Man-At-Arms2.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">No, not you Man at Arms! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now, obviously these guys are designed to look good en masse, so I needed to spend a lot less time on them per miniature; so simple colour schemes and one stage highlights all the way!<br />
<br />
For the Men at Arms units, I've decided to stick to my <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/charge.html" target="_blank">Lord's colour scheme</a>: i.e. mostly black. So, a simple black undercoat, pick out details in flesh, brown and dark metal, wash the detail colours, quick highlight, then quick highlight on the black with Eshin Gray: done. All that remained was to add a transfer (<a href="http://www.citadelsix.co.uk/" target="_blank">courtesy of Citadel Six</a>) and he was finished. The uniformity of the transfer will really help make them look like one big unit.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vXHJEK8QsSUGI_-IyQWrEIRBkcpgKfZ8rKfc3qjX6pDI0FbA17XMwMvaKrFs4jyOlzXOboOUHA_VXC8Jo6HlBchbqLhYsP2iVzxcVh00kZa0pJoAIEgFnpC3Myijn2GZ9vg2l0ZEM8I/s1600/MAA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vXHJEK8QsSUGI_-IyQWrEIRBkcpgKfZ8rKfc3qjX6pDI0FbA17XMwMvaKrFs4jyOlzXOboOUHA_VXC8Jo6HlBchbqLhYsP2iVzxcVh00kZa0pJoAIEgFnpC3Myijn2GZ9vg2l0ZEM8I/s1600/MAA.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">On his own: not so much with the fearsomeness. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm pleased with the end result: though basic, he was damned fast to paint, and once he's ranked up with several friends, I'm sure he'll look more impressive.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next, the archers. Now, the Men at Arms, I reasoned, were actual peasant militia, outfitted & equipped by their lord: in this instance, my general Andre de Lisque. Hence, they'll be in his colours, with his sigil on the shields. The models back that uniformity up: they're not identical, but they're fairly homogenous, and I've avoided adding any extraneous details to them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the archers, though, I fancied a more rag-tag approach. I see these guys as hunters, gamekeepers (and maybe even poachers in desperate times!) who're just rounded up to come with the army. Their role as scouts / foragers for the army would make them more independent, and they'd be less uniformly drilled or outfitted than the Men at Arms. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I've decided to paint them all slightly differently: mostly leaning towards a green/brown palate, but with plenty variation. Here's the first one:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrIG8nQmL8A1B8xdX1ZRnhR6is_0ObAkOrQe1V4gDqnUDh_ltYYd0qnxvWwC1svmVB74YKUk5YtMjM0YZnhNhJiKAdha3tt3BT7I6b3-Jq-7dOkguqVMsqH4ZFejYrJSu_3MWshIQ7AtE/s1600/Archer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrIG8nQmL8A1B8xdX1ZRnhR6is_0ObAkOrQe1V4gDqnUDh_ltYYd0qnxvWwC1svmVB74YKUk5YtMjM0YZnhNhJiKAdha3tt3BT7I6b3-Jq-7dOkguqVMsqH4ZFejYrJSu_3MWshIQ7AtE/s1600/Archer.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Twang!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
So I've let more colour in there, but kept it reasonably muted. The blue matches another Knight of the Realm (a standard bearer WIP) as my idea is that the archer units will be made up from peasants "belonging" to different lords, i.e. different Knights of the Realm. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The models reinforce this heterogeneity too; there's lots of different details and various accoutrements you can add to the models, which reflect the independence of these foragers. For instance, this chap has a mallet (for putting in stakes / tents, and a hand weapon in a pinch), and on his back he has a pigeon that he's presumably taken down earlier (and kept for supper).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVngjNzixduJ6_V_ujqAlEiJzeB4uVQqF95pHo9LppT3iI6kowUD83Gmyr1QAD9GIrbpTikxeEsitqM_vDWEyyKt8cQAtJAP6Bx3OUHukAzJ5jO4snSDfJkOC6NKi6h5mlgsFphdGkrLE/s1600/Archer+rear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVngjNzixduJ6_V_ujqAlEiJzeB4uVQqF95pHo9LppT3iI6kowUD83Gmyr1QAD9GIrbpTikxeEsitqM_vDWEyyKt8cQAtJAP6Bx3OUHukAzJ5jO4snSDfJkOC6NKi6h5mlgsFphdGkrLE/s320/Archer+rear.jpg" width="195" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yep, that's a pigeon in a pouch. Coo. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Both models were actually very quick to paint, and while individually they are less impressive, once ranked up I'm sure they'll look good. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My next WIP is the aforementioned Knights of the Realm standard bearer; hopefully I'll get him done soon. In the meantime, here's my mighty army so far: three whole models! </div>
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisnB8lzNGSIOtOmTsMVTNvLPCDFSIKdtUA2sqPuK9NZIphDWNLg3HqEe0iS179SU8PqKh-xuRRvttEi6X5GbrYGxtXD60w5ubKC-nbq6MCsrZGTSe11yuSRtqQV2HhPm5Sd1UeRuQL8LU/s1600/So+Far.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisnB8lzNGSIOtOmTsMVTNvLPCDFSIKdtUA2sqPuK9NZIphDWNLg3HqEe0iS179SU8PqKh-xuRRvttEi6X5GbrYGxtXD60w5ubKC-nbq6MCsrZGTSe11yuSRtqQV2HhPm5Sd1UeRuQL8LU/s1600/So+Far.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Arrayed against the many splendour'd hordes of Elves, the Undead and the Empire of Men, General De Lisque couldn't help but feel somewhat outnumbered.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Until the next time!</div>

</tbody></table>
This is simply a Knight of the Realm plastic model, with the champion's sword, a Knight Errant head, and the horse converted slightly to make it rear up a little (not too much, as at too steep an angle the barding looks weird).<br />
<br />
The intent is for this to be my general, representing...well, me! Hence the beard, and the <a href="http://www.houseofnames.com/leask-coat-of-arms" target="_blank">Leask coat of arms.</a><br />
<br />
Now, I imagined getting some heraldic symbols like stars and diamonds would be easy, allowing me to make my own coat of arms up, but surprisingly not. Even the usually reliable <a href="http://www.3vwargames.co.uk/" target="_blank">Veni Vidi Vici</a> didn't have anything <i>quite </i>right.<br />
<br />
I was close to despairing, when a bit of Google Fu turned up <a href="http://www.citadelsix.co.uk/" target="_blank">CitadelSix custom designs</a>. I knew it was possible to print your own custom transfers, but it's a faff, requiring special paper, spray on sealant, and I'd also need to get new ink...hassle.<br />
<br />
But CitadelSix essentially do that for you. You can order premade designs or, for no extra cost you can email a design and they'll print that for you. Handy. A few emails exchanged, and lo and behold: transfers!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFTaxJn3iOIlUmBGimtoksNe4LI4fmNwqQHN2fYUGU_4BbPnzEdSohI-SyefCsmr5CFLGq9DRrvQ4Rd-5kU14xz-afNdB7K70NKaR9D7k4HWnNk9zQ1s3GIhSLd0imZt9tx8jctb3tO3w/s1600/K2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFTaxJn3iOIlUmBGimtoksNe4LI4fmNwqQHN2fYUGU_4BbPnzEdSohI-SyefCsmr5CFLGq9DRrvQ4Rd-5kU14xz-afNdB7K70NKaR9D7k4HWnNk9zQ1s3GIhSLd0imZt9tx8jctb3tO3w/s1600/K2.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Side view: no way I could hand paint that so regularly!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now, they're not the cheapest things ever, but I don't intend on outfitting an entire army with custom designs. I've ordered designs for two knights (the second one will appear here in due course), plus the Leask coat of arms for my Men at Arms (one of which I will be painting next); that all came to £14 plus postage. Very reasonable.<br />
<br />
The transfers themselves are a little less malleable than what I'm used to, but for flat areas - shields, etc. - they work a treat. The set even has tiny little ones for all the little shields on the horse's harness, but I found them a bit fiddly, so only put one on the front of the horse's head, painting the others a blank white. I <i>may </i>go back and add more in later, but I wouldn't hold your breath. :)<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi0GCkQu3zRcey7v9_vokBu1C9ad1sWXFNLwBdKvzvLIp4NA-L_9BWdHaAvUyHcaYsfDbLvfG5MkU3Se0pAFiyD8cxFDUeiHiyH4VQG3s2mngpzK-5zNOTLFJ5QoFF3jWSItb5TjD-x_o/s1600/K3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi0GCkQu3zRcey7v9_vokBu1C9ad1sWXFNLwBdKvzvLIp4NA-L_9BWdHaAvUyHcaYsfDbLvfG5MkU3Se0pAFiyD8cxFDUeiHiyH4VQG3s2mngpzK-5zNOTLFJ5QoFF3jWSItb5TjD-x_o/s1600/K3.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rear view - the red scabbard really stands out, huh? I may change that later.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Overall, I'm happy with the model, and very happy with <a href="http://www.citadelsix.co.uk/" target="_blank">CitadelSix's</a> transfers. If you're after some custom detail, especially if it's fiddly / precise, I'd definitely recommend them.<br />
<br />
Until the next time!<br />

I know it's something of a cliché, but like a lot of little boys (and I don't doubt a lot of little girls) I've always been fascinated by stories of knights. When I was a kid, I had lots of knight related toys. I had heaps of toy knights, ranging from Lego to Britains model knights (remember those?). I had a cool scratch built wooden castle (that I think was made by a local dollhouse maker) and I had a wooden sword my dad made for me (which I may have used to terrorise my sisters...).<br />

When I was getting into this hobby, I was instantly drawn to the Bretonnians, being the Medieval Knight heavy army. I can remember well, when I was still very knew to the whole thing - I'd played Heroquest and D&D, and bought one issue of White Dwarf the year before - I got ill. Chest infection. I was off school for ages, and en route to the doctor, my mum said I could buy a magazine. I was going to get a comic, but then I saw White Dwarf and thought...why not? I spent the wait in the doctor's flicking through the magazine, and what should be inside? Why, a whole heap of Bretonnian models. (I think it was <a href="http://rpggeek.com/rpgissue/67943/white-dwarf-issue-136-apr-1991" target="_blank">issue 136</a>, but it was hard to find a decent index of issues)<br />
<br />
I was hooked.<br />
<br />
It so happened I was also reading TH White's "Once and Future King", as well as a Robin Hood novel, so all those Knights were well seared on my juvenile imagination.<br />
<br />

As it happened though, I was also mad-keen on sci-fi, and my burgeoning group of gamers were more drawn to 40K, so I never took up Warhammer until years later, when working at GW. And despite having had several armies, I never went for Bretonnia: mainly because of the job. See, one of the things about working in a Games Workshop store is that you have to paint a lot of minis. I mean A LOT. Especially when a new boxed game comes out. And while I was at GW, Warhammer 5th Edition came out. And it had a lot of knights.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">That's a lot of knights!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Strangely, painting all those sets never put me off Lizardmen, but it sure put me off Bretonnians (an issue still afflicting Baz, I know!).<br />
<br />
But I think I'm finally past all that. When I started this blog I mentioned that Bretonnian's <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/why-greenskins.html" target="_blank">"could wait" as they were "fiddly to paint". </a><br />
<br />
True enough, but the time I feel, is now.<br />
<br />
See, Andy Lawhammer is in the process of <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/mighty-empires-andy-edition.html" target="_blank">sprucing up Mighty Empires</a> to function as a Warhammer campaign system, and I'm very excited at the prospect. What's more, I've hit that army painting slump with my orcs. I like the models, I want to paint them, but I've painted so many it's getting tedious. Plus, I'm at the stage of bulking out extant units...doubly tedious.<br />
<br />
What's more, as well as keeping up with Game of Thrones (a rewatch before Season 3 was needed in order to convert my wife to the show...), I also watched the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118354/" target="_blank">90s BBC Ivanhoe serie</a>s. A whole lot of jousting fun!<br />

<br />
So I've decided to get a wee Bretonnian army on the side. They'll be fun to paint, to break the monotony of the Orcs. They'll also be very different to play. And if the worst comes to the worst, and I never actually get to play with them? No biggy, I'm sure I'll find them a home on eBay. ;) So, that being the case, I picked up a Battalion today.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgI7tK7peYejgYJ_6AWiboBajp0D0hlqiqeH7dcBcorcAPuYde8-usgIW2slkYtly5gpXd_0qnSLGfdtRT64aY4Z_Z4P5BgYRE_kdMxJ_7QIY7r6-2sYZtrGTYP2hHTGZGU8S3A_xQ1LA/s1600/m400906_99120203008_BretonnianBattalionMain_445x319.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgI7tK7peYejgYJ_6AWiboBajp0D0hlqiqeH7dcBcorcAPuYde8-usgIW2slkYtly5gpXd_0qnSLGfdtRT64aY4Z_Z4P5BgYRE_kdMxJ_7QIY7r6-2sYZtrGTYP2hHTGZGU8S3A_xQ1LA/s400/m400906_99120203008_BretonnianBattalionMain_445x319.jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bretonnian Battalion - good value for £60 I'd say!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was briefly tempted by the very good Fireforge Teutonic/Templar Knights (you can see them here on t<a href="http://www.fireforge-games.com/" target="_blank">heir very hard to navigate and overall pretty poor website</a>). They look pretty ace, and they're cheaper than GW. And they're plastic. They're also a bit smaller than GW, so I'd need to commit to 100% Fire Forge, and also to my army looking weeny on the table. So I popped into town, caught up with Baz, and bought the battalion.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I plan to paint them up in small batches, and I intend to make them as characterful as I can. That doesn't necessarily mean masses of conversions, but each Knight is a lord, and I intend to name them all, and try to make up their complex genealogy. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But of course I need to think about my general. They always say in the Warhammer rulebook that your general represents you on the battlefield, so I've decided to take that (almost) literally. Step forward Andre De Lisque, Bretonnian Knight! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is the Leask coat of arms. I may not use it on my Men at Arms' shields! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
I'll use the Leask coat of arms for my general and his family. I may chicken out of doing my men at arms' shields with that heraldry though, as I don't have transfers for stars/diamonds, unless anyone knows any good places? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I decided to do the general first, on a horse initially (though I may do him on a Royal Pegasus, or even a Hippogriff in the future - all my enemies seem to have DRAGONS!). I fiddled with the horse's base to make him rearing slightly, and put on a knight without a helmet, so you could see his face. I clipped the hilt away from the scabbarded sword, as he had a drawn sword in his other hand and also put a helmet on a chain hanging from his belt. I considered adding a lance to his back, but it looked naff so I took it off. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But it was missing something. This is supposed to be the general, the leader. It's supposed to be me! What's it missing? Well I couldn't give it glasses or a big belly, but I could give him a beard. To the greenstuff!</div>

<br />
[/Clash]<br />
<br />
So, inaugural matches for the Marienburg Stealers last night, and a lot of fun was had. Touchdowns were scored, skills were earned, players were killed, and laughs were...er, laughed.<br />
<br />
First up, I played <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105893495475029760425" target="_blank">+Lindsay Law</a>'s <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/blood-bowl-human-team.html" target="_blank">human team</a>, including Bert the Ogre! Eek!<br />
<br />
The game began well, with a quick score from the Stealers; man, Skaven are fast. <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105893495475029760425" target="_blank">+Lindsay</a>'s team put a real hurting on the rats, though, killing two linerats outright, and keeping 1 to 3 players knocked out throughout the game.<br />
<br />
Despite being outnumbered (and facing an Ogre!) the rats were just too damned fast and too damned nippy (Gutter runners proving to be the real stars of the team, despite their paltry strength of 2), and while the Humans were able to score a touchdown of their own, the Stealers also managed to sneak in another. Another three!<br />
<br />
In true rat form, after scoring the spectacular final touchdown, I set up for the single remaining human turn in a classic "cowardly lion" formation:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6djuRhb-CpDae8SkborK5gp_Q4C9FYmPSRBFEFTDoKLBhyphenhyphen24msH5s_f3EYb17lmZ9dqgm7CDpxe2rItKhYUbRZNi1o5lO_P6aGvCSaE4xpindLgxd2g44EL53zA-Nr7YCJ8yteAoHU3o/s1600/FINAL+TURN.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6djuRhb-CpDae8SkborK5gp_Q4C9FYmPSRBFEFTDoKLBhyphenhyphen24msH5s_f3EYb17lmZ9dqgm7CDpxe2rItKhYUbRZNi1o5lO_P6aGvCSaE4xpindLgxd2g44EL53zA-Nr7YCJ8yteAoHU3o/s640/FINAL+TURN.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Stealers to the left of the picture: minimum 3 linerats in the line of scrimmage, <br />the rest of the team out of blitzing range!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So, final score 4-1: a solid win, but having lost two players, my team value barely went up, despite gaining a fan factor and buying an apothecary. Two of my Gutter Runners gained skills, too: Skreekit took Guard (rolled a double!) and Snikt took block. Nice. I rounded out my depleted numbers with a Journeyman linerat to take my numbers up to 11, to play against <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/110448434306479099784" target="_blank">+Andrew</a>'s <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/converted-high-elf-blood-bowl-team.html" target="_blank">high elf team</a>.<br />
<br />
These weren't all painted yet, indeed the catchers are still sporting stumps instead of mitts, but the conversions look great. The game initially went all my way: I got lucky with armour and injury rolls, killing an Elf early on, as well as knocking others out. I took an early lead in the points, and was accruing SPPs: Krikt, a Blitzer, killed an Elf and scored a touchdown, meaning he was going to get a skill roll, and in a foolish demonstration of hubris, I gave him the nickname "Elfkilla".<br />
<br />
Of course, next restart, having just scored (taking it to 2-1), the Kick Off Table result lead to a giant rock being dropped on his head, killing him. "No worries," says I, "that's what the apothecary is for." I reroll and...of course...he's still dead. Nuts.<br />
<br />
As the game went on, it grew closer and closer. Both teams were below 11 players now, and we took turns being a man down (well, an elf/rat down). The second turn, in particular, degenerated into farce, as the ball seemed to be coated in butter: nobody could pick the damned thing up, or pass it worth a damn.<br />
<br />
We ended up in a swirling melee in the centre, with all bar two players in base to base contact. It was 2-2, in the bottom of the second half. The next score was almost guaranteed to win. <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/110448434306479099784" target="_blank">+Andrew</a> executed an excellent an excellent manoeuvre, and needed a 2+ to go for it to score...and rolled a 1! With no rerolls, the ball bounced loose: turnover! I ran a gutter runner in, against the odds, he picked up the ball, and successfully passed it into the melee...only for the receiver (ironically, by only remaining thrower!) to fail the catch.<br />
<br />
The ball bounces all over the place: Andy has some poor luck, as do I; nobody can do anything with the ball! I try an audacious plan, blocking Andy's players to shove mine closer to the end zone...but fail the dodge out. Andy shoves one of my gutter runners around, needing 4 separate 2 dice blocks before he finally knocked him over, freeing the ball. A gutsy pass and the pointy-ears scored, taking the final score to 3-2 defeat for the stealers.<br />
<br />
Great fun, classic Blood Bowl! :)<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfiGIa75WFqFlauld67pQyevviL8Tz6Imp-rkuxA9go-UdJDsn4zlA80HLOAEkZmhS9oGOb8v2wY3NPoGo7cHBP4sbCuHIo-ZVe92y2eFVSIWC0BKtyL2FMbqbK4GgrgNTI0ri06Ea7DY/s1600/Team.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="339" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfiGIa75WFqFlauld67pQyevviL8Tz6Imp-rkuxA9go-UdJDsn4zlA80HLOAEkZmhS9oGOb8v2wY3NPoGo7cHBP4sbCuHIo-ZVe92y2eFVSIWC0BKtyL2FMbqbK4GgrgNTI0ri06Ea7DY/s640/Team.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Stealers, newly colour coded</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One thing that became apparent during the games, was that it was hard to tell my players apart. I found the gutter runners easy enough to spot, being black, but my opponents struggled, possibly because from the front the brown skin is more visible. The throwers were the real issue for me though: from the rear they really were just linerats, as the ball they were carrying was tucked in their waist.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, I don't really have the time (or the patience!) to do a more ambitious conversion, to give them raised throwing arms, but a discussion of 2nd ed BB led to the answer: colour coding. It would feel wrong to to that to a Warhammer army, but Blood Bowl is much more of a board game, so colouring in the sides of the bases to indicate a player's class was a simple solution.<br />
<br />
So now Blitzers are red, Gutter Runners black, Throwers brown, and Linerats green: hopefully that will help them be more clearly identified.<br />
<br />
We did the post match stuff: Skreekit got another roll (having scored again) and rolled a double 5, meaning he had the choice of a skill from any table, or +1MA/+1AV. As tempting as extra armour was, a Gutter Runner with MA10 was just too tempting, so that's what I took.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOp3ZsBEytUE0GvArj_s3TH6G29LoCmqu193lH3f7HIELRY4v7MNSqp6AYjjK4lO9Q88bqgh8tmL17WkOCvftfke7PZ0o8f7wA82QV3tEpobybSkzt3_3tQc9IWpqmRv_DTLEUTvfsOfU/s1600/GR1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOp3ZsBEytUE0GvArj_s3TH6G29LoCmqu193lH3f7HIELRY4v7MNSqp6AYjjK4lO9Q88bqgh8tmL17WkOCvftfke7PZ0o8f7wA82QV3tEpobybSkzt3_3tQc9IWpqmRv_DTLEUTvfsOfU/s1600/GR1.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Skreekit! Skreekit! Skreekit!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I lack the funds to replace my fallen Blitzer, so I'll probably round out the numbers with Journeymen Linerats in the meantime, keeping the value down and hopefully getting some inducements. Or I could get a 4th Gutter Runner...<br />
<br />
;)<br />

I finished my first bunch of Skaven, i.e. my starting team. I probably won't actually field all of them at once, needing to spend some pennies on reroll/fan-factor, but it's good to have options. I may regret not investing in a rat ogre though, as apparently <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105893495475029760425" target="_blank">+Lindsay Law</a> will have an ogre tomorrow. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">#14 & #15 - slaves</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A number of the Skaven models have chains and collars on, fitting the race's use of slaves. I quite like the idea of some of the Skaven team being "professionals", in it for the warp tokens, and others being slaves, owned by the manager. Very gladiatorial.<br />
<br />
But I was left with a problem with these two: they're topless. I could put their numbers on their loincloths, but all the rest are on back or head coverings. What to do, what to do...<br />
<br />
I know! Brand 'em!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">HISS...Squeak squeak!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ouchy. Now, I'm not actually very happy with how the "branding" worked out. I tried to replicate images of branded cattle I found online (charred round the edges, slightly lighter skin tone in the middle), but it didn't quite work, and I may well revisit later.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Marienburg Stealers</td></tr>

And here they are in all their glory. The Marienburg Stealers. Overall, I'm quite happy with them, considering they're so hastily converted and painted.<br />
<br />
Now, to see how they fair on the field...<br />

<br />
Today I have a couple of linemen, and my throwers.<br />
<br />
As I <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/the-marienburg-stealers.html" target="_blank">mentioned before</a>, I wasn't happy with the thrower conversions, and I remain unsatisfied. I may have another go in the future (when I either secure some new balls - ooer, fnar fnar, etc. - or try making some in green stuff), but they'll do for now.<br />
<br />
So here's the first one, lucky number 7:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">#7 - looks fine from this angle</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOmpQZE27aEq2v-6x8stGLe27txMbSwYQXZCctOm0F82wk4X5tWLoPAftx3gP27dywgL1xmW6OLzN2ClLGzv4r9fgiYCgJnnWzfC9qcP5Xzqem6hX6Qxce7D8OXKsPjj3NITutTAhAVTI/s1600/Thrower+1b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOmpQZE27aEq2v-6x8stGLe27txMbSwYQXZCctOm0F82wk4X5tWLoPAftx3gP27dywgL1xmW6OLzN2ClLGzv4r9fgiYCgJnnWzfC9qcP5Xzqem6hX6Qxce7D8OXKsPjj3NITutTAhAVTI/s1600/Thrower+1b.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hmm, are you sure that ball is regulation standard?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtRRAN8n06LZiM7yC485AnkBiI63kUACTBA1W7RIz9lFZFsywb-YE0AY2qX_MyD1E5mfhDipfH8_qDQyf8Bkg0bTctyTyt33MmqKytZNWdrvUJXil7EYh-hfZCW0fqhYHXA2C6IJBNtVg/s1600/Thrower+1c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtRRAN8n06LZiM7yC485AnkBiI63kUACTBA1W7RIz9lFZFsywb-YE0AY2qX_MyD1E5mfhDipfH8_qDQyf8Bkg0bTctyTyt33MmqKytZNWdrvUJXil7EYh-hfZCW0fqhYHXA2C6IJBNtVg/s1600/Thrower+1c.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Definitely not an orc skull? You promise? OK. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So finding a hand in the throwing position was beyond my limited means: I tried using a spare orc shaman hand I had, but it was too big, and too awkward. So I opted for simply having the ball tucked under the thrower's arm. It's a symbolic ball, anyway. But as I lacked balls - ooer redux - I used what I had to hand. In this instance, an orc skull.<br />
<br />
It's vaguely ball shaped: I thought I'd get away with it, and initially painted it red. But it was obviously a skull, so I repainted it skull coloured. What the hell, Skaven probably would play using orc skulls. Or even cheat by bringing on their own balls...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

For thrower the second - #8 - I used an undead helmet I had left over from the bitz <a href="http://teatimeofthedead.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Andrew</a> gave me. It actually looks pretty good, as one of the plastic balls in the game has metal spikes/collar like that. If you look too closely, of course, it becomes apparent that it's too small, and the wrong shape, but I refer you to my earlier "skaven cheat" point. (Or point behind you and yell "Saulot!". That's for you <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105893495475029760425" target="_blank">+Lindsay Law</a> ;) )<br />
<br />
My linemen - linerats? - are pretty dull, though I have a few interesting ones next time, For now, here are the first two, bog standard ones.<br />

Couldn't resist. :)<br />
<br />
Anyhoo, the reason for today's post is I have another 4 players painted: gutter runners this time. The sneaky, shifty assassin-types of the Skaven army, these have long been some of my favourites in the Skaven army, both on the tabletop and in the roleplaying game (I have fond memories of <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105893495475029760425" target="_blank">+Lindsay</a> and I chasing some through the streets of Nuln in <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/110448434306479099784" target="_blank">+Andrew</a>'s WFRP campaign...).<br />
<br />
Photos below: same drill as with the Blitzers, I picked body/heads that were naturally appropriate (i.e. hooded/robed), then enhanced where I could. The first two I armed with punch-daggers, but clipped the blades off, leaving them with some nasty looking (but wholly Blood Bowl-legal) brass knuckles.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvuK4CwOu41GBMGc2VGpo-PA7kQhQN_7jVE5jmozaCuRqsS9h7MYJt8Kd39VLwOwZ2lDVkASsYCKV1XCgk-WCzul8atADRK9dXZXf8-Owb5Vr7z_anGrXV8meEw7RDM2HEIvOixTmx7es/s1600/GR1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvuK4CwOu41GBMGc2VGpo-PA7kQhQN_7jVE5jmozaCuRqsS9h7MYJt8Kd39VLwOwZ2lDVkASsYCKV1XCgk-WCzul8atADRK9dXZXf8-Owb5Vr7z_anGrXV8meEw7RDM2HEIvOixTmx7es/s200/GR1.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sneak-sneak!</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Punch-punch!</td></tr>

<div>
Then I made this fella. I had a spare cloak from<a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/adapt-improvise-overcome.html" target="_blank"> my wolf rider conversions,</a> so I slapped that on. As I was perusing the hands on offer, I noticed one with a sneaky dagger hidden along the forearm, As these are my sneakiest players, it just felt right. :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Me? The #6 Gutter Runner for the Marienburg Stealers? <br />
With a knife under my cloak? With MY reputation? </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then the final one...I spotted another dagger wielding arm, and remembering that the Skaven's attempts at subtlety don't always work as intended, I threw caution to the wind, carefully concealing this dagger with...well, with nothing. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div>
Not subtle, but it appealed to my sense of whimsy! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So that's 6 players down, and the team are looking like this so far:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkUXY29msC_FDGSmDhuwG2QeXAIYgfW_kDtIdwjt6Ad07d7DRiSGmtulddU9FzBE7D06yuCPA_cjSciqpEr3StTnB0owxrv5AiCL_YVSGjoYGFclAYXJtAeHtTCuBH4x77DqPgowBpmuM/s1600/GR2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; color: black;"> </span></a></div>

I'm chuffed with how quickly they're coming along. They're not well painted by any standard, but they'll do, dammit!<br />
<br />
Incidentally, I was going to crop the top of that photo, but my out of focus fire in the background looks uncannily as if the Horned Rat himself is watching the team being assembled eagerly, so I left it in.<br />
<br />
A few days off the blog now, but I'll be back in a week or so with some more players.<br />

While days spent lolling on the couch or playing on the PS3 for 8 hours straight are all well and good, there is an undeniable satisfaction in achieving something on holiday.<br />
<br />
OK, all I achieved was to make my mind up and paint some models, but still. Baby steps.<br />
<br />
So, my chum <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Andy Lawhammer's</a> been making a<a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/top-10-games-workshop-games-5.html" target="_blank"> top-ten of GW games</a> (speaking of which <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/110448434306479099784" target="_blank">+Andrew</a>, where's number 4?...) and at number 5, he placed Blood Bowl. Cue much reminiscing, a brief encounter with Google, and <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/blood-bowl-set-painted.html" target="_blank">he's bought a copy</a>. And given how much I love the game, it's no surprise I wanted in on the action.<br />
<br />
But what team to pick? Initially I planned to buy my own copy of the game and convert the plastic humans to become a Bretonnian team (<a href="http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?136542-Bretonnian-Blood-Bowl-Team-Conversion" target="_blank">like this chap on Warseer</a>), and indeed I may well do that in time (as if nothing else it'll give me an excuse to buy and paint some Knights. And I do like knights.)<br />
<br />
But for now I plumped for those nefarious ratmen, the Skaven. Now, the GW Skaven Team are fine (<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1100076&amp;_requestid=350397" target="_blank">you can see them here</a>), but they're 30 quid, there's only 12 of them, and they're in metal. No thanks. Instead, I picked up a plastic box of clan rats from <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/111091261889197377062" target="_blank">+Baz Morrison</a>'s shop and set to converting. They're all converted now, and I'll paint them up over the next week or two. Some I'm pleased with. Some, like the throwers, are not brilliant, but they're OK for now.<br />
<br />
So, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRBYq9MiddI" target="_blank">without further gilding the lily and with no more ado</a>, I give you the first two players of the Marienburg Stealers.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Blitzer 2 - Vurk</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
On the whole, I'm quite pleased with them.<br />
<br />
I picked more armoured heads/torsos, to fit the blitzer look, and I added a couple of spare savage orc "plumes" (hairsquigs?) to make them stand out from the linemen. A couple of other random orky bitz went on too, to give them shoulder pads (which the linemen will be lacking...).<br />
<br />
They're not well painted, nor are they thoughtfully converted, but you know what? They'll do.<br />
<br />
I haven't put numbers on yet, and I'll probably flock the bases eventually. The name, Marienburg Stealers, is obviously derived from Pittsburgh Steelers. I was going to do them in black, but it didn't look right and I have a lot of green paint. :)<br />
<br />
Speaking of green, I also had time to finish off the first of my new Orc units for WFB (a bigger post on my Waaagh in a week or two): my sister in law <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/100920862438150071512" target="_blank">+Gillian Bruce</a> got me some Savage Orc Boar Boyz for my birthday (ta!) and here's the first of them: the standard bearer.<br />

I was relieved that my ability to speed-paint orcs hasn't diminished in the 6 months or so since I last had time to wield a brush. The boar I'm especially pleased with. The photo doesn't do them justice (I really do need to work on my photography, I know: an iPhone camera in a softly-lit living room is not a photogenic environment!).<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ride the Pig...bash some skulls...</td></tr>

I was really pleased with the boar's face. This time, I highlighted it all the same: skin, tusks, et al. Gorthor Brown, Tallarn Sand, Ushabti Bone, touch of White Scar on the tips of the tusks. Then I applied an Agrax Earthshade wash, but only to the skin, not the tusks, and the effect is great.<br />

It worked so well, I did the same thing on the rider's leather/wood/bone bits. It's not quite as effective there, but it's so very, very quick I'm going to stick with it.<br />

So there you go. A productive day, by the standards of school holidays, any way.Vonbloodbathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07301222468047181564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651938978924680817.post-70255836695218983752013-04-04T11:30:00.000+01:002013-04-04T11:31:55.140+01:00Coffee & RecyclingSo on Monday, while out searching for garden furniture (among other things) I decided to treat myself. Not to th<a href="http://www.diy.com/nav/garden/outdoor-living/garden-furniture/garden-furniture-sets/rocking_chairs/Moretta-Rocking-Chair-Green-12718767?skuId=13239473" target="_blank">e awesome garden rocking chair/recliner</a> (though I'll be getting that in due course, believe me), but to a coffee machine.<br />
<br />
If you know me, you know I love my coffee.<br />
<br />
In the past I've owned many different coffee machines; most recently I had an excellent pump espresso machine that made delicious coffee, but it died during the house move the other year so I've been making do with instant (generally just when my dad's visiting) and cafetiere (mostly at work). Indeed, I use <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smartcafe-Hot-Cafetiere-Mug-Platinum/dp/B0007MTNJ0" target="_blank">one of these bad boys </a>at work:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsw4pYyUphNOWvJvfxKfKw9N35Xh-5dwGm0QX26g07vThaeHCSHKkmMTI4uGJI-6DBEgVLs3xIr51flFCFfq9j23InHf1tSVfW4Htl-LTcYSzMnISkhQ94qk54YHDgrI-TaiGB8Z8mEhM/s1600/cafetiere_mugs.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsw4pYyUphNOWvJvfxKfKw9N35Xh-5dwGm0QX26g07vThaeHCSHKkmMTI4uGJI-6DBEgVLs3xIr51flFCFfq9j23InHf1tSVfW4Htl-LTcYSzMnISkhQ94qk54YHDgrI-TaiGB8Z8mEhM/s320/cafetiere_mugs.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cafetiere mug - the de facto badge of the English teacher</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
But the fact is, it's a faff to make coffee that way. It takes time and effort - both of which are in short supply these days - and I've discovered that unless you rinse really, really carefully, coffee grounds get EVERYWHERE in the dishwasher. Less than ideal.<br />
<br />
So when I saw Tesco had a special offer on a <a href="http://www.tesco.com/direct/tassimo-t40-2-coffee-machine-black/209-1211.prd" target="_blank">Tassimo</a> machine, I couldn't resist.<br />
<br />
Is the coffee quite as nice as grinding your own beans and making it from scratch? No. Is it close though? Yes. And is it less faff? Hell yes, to the power of 3.<br />
<br />
The only nagging concern I was left with was the wastage. I'm an environmentally concerned chap, and of course the box etc. was all getting recycled. But I wasn't sure what to do with the little pod things (<a href="https://www.tassimo.co.uk/discover/t-discs/891" target="_blank">t-discs, apparently</a>). Were they recyclable? Would I have to open them up and scrape out the grounds, thus negating the whole no-faff thing?<br />
<br />
Mercifully, no.<br />
<br />
My Google-fu revealed this excellent site: <a href="http://www.terracycle.co.uk/en-UK/" target="_blank">Terracycle</a>.<br />
<br />
They specialise in recycling (or upcycling) hard to recycle products, including... Tassimo t-discs. What's more, doing so also earns money for charity. Even better, the energy monitor Scottish Gas installed recently shows that the Tassimo machine uses a lot less power than boiling the kettle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh3li8MwY3rvfuvx3KEhlYL-W3o-hSZCqaGsECE1L96rzzHLSGGlnuQlb_5c0i10ZoOqTJOFTMZwdmJfZ6iYFRBHUgfbp_7B9UrRDUaTALKPQ1SksYqEzvescsg69jRKyzHL4edyjNdQw/s1600/Tin_Sign_Coffee_If_Youre_Not_Shaking_You_Need_Another_Cup_Vintage_Country_Decor_TSN1714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh3li8MwY3rvfuvx3KEhlYL-W3o-hSZCqaGsECE1L96rzzHLSGGlnuQlb_5c0i10ZoOqTJOFTMZwdmJfZ6iYFRBHUgfbp_7B9UrRDUaTALKPQ1SksYqEzvescsg69jRKyzHL4edyjNdQw/s320/Tin_Sign_Coffee_If_Youre_Not_Shaking_You_Need_Another_Cup_Vintage_Country_Decor_TSN1714.jpg" width="249" /></a></div>
<br />
So...good coffee, less energy used, fully recyclable packaging that earns money for charity? Don't mind if I do.<br />
<br />
Anyone fancy a coffee?<br />

<br />
It's been a while, huh?<br />
<br />
Painting has had to take a back seat to work (boo!) as, indeed, has gaming (double boo!). So I neglected the blog too (triple...well, you get the idea). In the interim, Cyanide have released an RPG called 'Of Orcs and Men' and it looks like <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/top-10-games-workshop-games-5.html" target="_blank">The Lawhammers </a>and I will be playing Bloodbowl in the not too distant, so a name change seemed in order, hence: VonBlogbath.<br />

More to follow anon.<br />

First off is that I finished my next 5 wolf riders today (the ones I whinged about converting <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/adapt-improvise-overcome.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
I do love these wolf models and wolf riders have always been a favourite of mine. Partially because of the rapid movement, but also because of fond memories and fevered imaginings of the battle of five armies from <i>The Hobbit. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
The group shot was too blurry, but here are a few solo shots:<br />

Initially, things were almost all going my way. Barring some very unlucky animosity rolls, it all went my way in the first 2 turns.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Turn 1</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Morthang swept through the centre of Andrew's army, taking out the Hex Wraiths and the Undead Heavy Cav too. The Spider Riders not only broke the dire wolf unit, they swept into the black coach and (along with the goblin archers who were "suffering" under animosity) destroyed it to. The Spiders' poisoned attacks were very lucky, and Andrew's ward saves were very unlucky.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, though, my savage orc big uns and orc boyz were going nowhere fast, as they failed animosity test after animosity test.<br />
<br />
Morthang ended up in combat, alongside the wolf riders, with a skelly warrior unit. It should have been a bloodbath, but the Wyvern rolled poorly, as did the wolf riders, and though beaten, the undead hung on.<br />
<br />
At this point we made a wee rules mistake, and assumed Morthang (who was no longer in B2B) would be free from the combat, as he'd wiped out all the skellies he was in B2B with. In truth, he should have been moved into contact again. As it was, he was out on his own, and a combination of a Tomb Banshee's howl attack and a Cairn Wraith chill attack killed him. The Wyvern broke from combat and was killed. Gutted. I gave him the Trickster's Helm, but against those special undead attacks, it was totally useless. Bah. Lesson learned: against undead, you need a ward save!<br />
<br />
From this point on, it was downhill for the greenskins. Andrew's general - Eichengard - is nuggets. Fencers blades, plus a ward, plus a couple of blood gifts, make him a combat wombat. There was just nothing my lesser characters could do against him. Morthang, on Wyvern, would have done alright, I think, but a Big Boss just ain't that big.<br />
<br />
I plugged away, and my boyz did OK, but he was killing 5 to 8 boyz a turn. We stood no chance (though bigger units may help in the future...).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-iRSIF8-oYroqSgCxUT6xJlxDGH1tmDhMMFNqGrvDkzLe7e3uGRg_AiXEgsyYBkFEgFDk0i7U5NYgZRq4p6l-hZissdLD_VnRWEMXrSMEveWGMTyPMdJfbaPmMLkVd3m8HO2aV0ZewQ/s1600/Penultimate+Turn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-iRSIF8-oYroqSgCxUT6xJlxDGH1tmDhMMFNqGrvDkzLe7e3uGRg_AiXEgsyYBkFEgFDk0i7U5NYgZRq4p6l-hZissdLD_VnRWEMXrSMEveWGMTyPMdJfbaPmMLkVd3m8HO2aV0ZewQ/s400/Penultimate+Turn.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Penultimate Turn<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In the end we were left in the odd situation where Eichengard and one skelly were in combat with my unit. Eichengard kept offering challenges then obliterating my characters. With hindsight, I probably would have been better refusing the challenge (unOrcy though!) and hoping some boys were left in B2B to hurt him. Also, again, bigger units may have managed to overcome his insane amount of damage.<br />
<br />
What was odd, was that if there had been more skellies there, my savage orcs would have killed them, meaning they won the combat, meaning Eichengard took wounds and died. As it was though, they just stood around like plums, watching him slaughter character after character.<br />
<br />
So a victory to the undead.<br />
<br />
Lessons learned:<br />
<br />
1 - ward save vs. the undead.<br />
2 - don't play scenarios where you play lengthways, as animosity is a killer.<br />
3 - I really need bigger units.<br />
<br />
Good fun game though. At any point it could have gone differently: If Morthang hadn't been able to be reached by the Cairn Wraiths, he'd have survived at least one more turn, possibly longer. If my infantry hadn't failed all those animosity tests, they'd have been attacking Eichengard at the same time as the small boar boy unit (whose magic banner negated his magic items, though in truth it's the blood gifts that did most harm).<br />
<br />
Equally, if Andrew's black coach and/or wolves had survived, or his cavalry...<br />
<br />
Already looking forward to the next game (and hoping my ordered stuff arrives soon!).<br />
<br />
<br />

Wasn't it? Standard.The other day I<a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/adapt-improvise-overcome.html" target="_blank"> posted about a couple of conversions I did for my army</a>; given I'm playing Andrew B's shambling hordes on Monday, I figured I'd best pull my finger out and get on with the painting.<br />
<br />
So I did.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhopM95_cSHUfdJLhp9GMOy2q8dxFA0R3x4SklBL8GTFzFHKes3H_IzYBPx2qWVBb3koupsdj1a2uNui6aX_csJe3DHeDNp6vcV3uUeQLH2txShrb-PkMdUUA7TUkfItRFYHyW1nKmBNkY/s1600/Leadbelly+Front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhopM95_cSHUfdJLhp9GMOy2q8dxFA0R3x4SklBL8GTFzFHKes3H_IzYBPx2qWVBb3koupsdj1a2uNui6aX_csJe3DHeDNp6vcV3uUeQLH2txShrb-PkMdUUA7TUkfItRFYHyW1nKmBNkY/s400/Leadbelly+Front.jpg" width="328" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">LEADBELLY: Orc Battle Standard Bearer</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Converted from the Avatar of War shaman model, with weapons and standards from the Orc sprues and armour and skulls from the undead sprue. I wanted him to stand out, and since red was the detail colour for my army, it made sense to do his cloak and standard in that colour. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Given his rag-tag, mismatched armour, I decided to paint the banner as if it had been looted. So I painted it up with a black chevron, intentionally aping <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/arooooo.html" target="_blank">the design on the shield of my wolf rider musician. </a>The idea being that Morthang's Waaagh have tangled with a Bretonnian army before, squishing some Knights Errant in the process. Then I slapped some orcy glyphs on top. The skull design has been repeated across my army, but I added a crude, stylised flaming sword, as he is Morthang Da Burna's standard bearer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm super-chuffed with how he turned out. He's virtually unrecognisable as the same model as my shaman<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg34N3eDNfvNGLknxmBu0AEN_MkTwGY2JDJ5_yckQPZkOipJ-91NOXIxheJImkbWAKEEkDwYq5-Ea7uklUvakji49FmNkYSBdE5UAKfjGDHeDXN6kySJrJniiJ23V32cmZEET4RXr5PVVE/s1600/Drogrot+1.jpg" target="_blank"> Drogrot Gorkeye. </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was concerned he'd look more similar from the rear, as the cloak has a lot of detail. It is amazing, though, the difference a paintjob makes. A shield slapped on, and a banner to draw the eye, combined with a lick of red paint and Gork's your uncle. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Leadbelly from behind</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to "dirty up" the banner and his tattered red cloak. Initially I was going to use a brown wash (Agrax Earth Shade to the rescue) but it turned the glyphs a funny pink colour. Once that dried, and I redid the white glyphs, I opted for a drybrush of bown/black instead, and it worked really well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I put him in the unit, he looks even better, nicely offsetting the red of the shields. Here he is with the Orc Boyz unit "Da Red Skullz" and their boss Grak Skulltaker.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Leadbelly in situ with Da Red Skullz</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Finally, before I sign off, here's a shot of Leadbelly and Big Toof, my savage orc big boss. I did take a shot of Big Toof in Skargutz' Boyz, along with Drogrot the shaman, but Big Toof's sword is blocking Drogrot from the camera, so I'll try that again later.<br />

Improvise. Overcome.As I mentioned<a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/victory-and-not-quite-victory-but-not.html" target="_blank"> last post</a>, I'm doing some converting just now: to whit, one Battle Standard Bearer (as well as some more wolf riders). I'm using the Shaman model from Avatar of War, as I ended up with 2 by accident, and I knew I had lots of spare Orcy bits. Behold: Orc Big Boss and Morthang's Battle Standard Bearer.<br />

Flash has killed the detail on the metal bits, but hopefully you can see well enough that it's hardly recognisable as a shaman. The head and sword-hand, as well as spear/banner are basic Orc Boy bitz, while his armour is from the skelly warrior bits, donated by Andrew B. One breastplate looked too small, but I had the idea to put two on him, as if he was too big and fat to get armour that fit him. A green stuff belly and a dab of glue, and he has a name: Leadbelly. Some more undead bits and bobs finish him off, hiding the handle of the staff, and a pile o'skulls on the base. Trophies and what not.<br />
<br />
<br />

He looked pretty different from behind, too, but I popped a shield on his back to hide some of the detail, to make him look different, and to keep him in line with the Orc Boyz he'll be accompanying to battle.<br />
<br />
`Remarkably fast to do, and I think he'll look great once he's painted.<br />
<br />
So, on to the wolf-riders.<br />
<br />
I wasn't planning on posting anything about these guys. I've already <a href="http://vonbloodbath.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/arooooo.html" target="_blank">blogged</a> about GW's awesome Fenrisian Wolf models, and how good they look as wolf-rider mounts. However, when I went to make my next five, I encountered a problem. Maths.<br />
<br />
I had miscounted when I checked I had enough bitz left over for 10 riders. Specifically, I was shy right arms with bows and, more worryingly, left arms. Not just left arms with the right pose or weapon, but left arms. Period.<br />
<br />
D'oh!<br />
<br />
Time to adapt, improvise and overcome! To deal with the bow issue, I mostly used spears. I made a few in a throwing pose, and ensured they all had quivers and bows on their backs. This will mean I can split the spears up and say the units just have bows or, if I ever want a unit with spears, I can put them together and hey-presto! Spear unit.<br />
<br />
The other arms were trickier though. In my first Frankenstein's monster, I used two bits of different right arms chopped up and put together to make something that looked roughly arm and elbow-like. The hand was a round stump, but that was easily hidden behind a shield. Turned out OK, in the end.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
So, buoyed by my pleasant surprise, I turned to the musician. I am sick to bits of the Goblin musician. There is just one instrument - a horn, gripped in the right hand - and so far I've done one for my archers and my first wolf-rider unit. I couldn't face yet another, but luckily I didn't have to as Andrew B's undead sprues contained an enormous horn, which was just too comical not to use. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Problem was, it had a skelly arm in it. So some snipping, and finagling, and I had a goblin arm in there. The hand is a touch too small - being a skelly hand, but once the shield's whacked on, it looks grand. </div>

(and not quite victory but not quite utter defeat either!)As Andy Lawhammer mentions <a href="http://lawhammer.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/warhammer-day.html" target="_blank">here</a>, and t'other Andrew mentions <a href="http://teatimeofthedead.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/paint-it-black.html" target="_blank">here</a>, I played a couple of games on Saturday.<br />
<br />
The first, against Andrew Bell's undead, was an overwhelming victory for my ladz. Cue happy orcs.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ERMAHGERD! WE WON!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My army mostly performed well. A little bad luck, and a little good; Andrew B was hamstrung by the theme of his army. He wants one led by his PC from our RPG, who is not a vampire, so he has been having a necromancer lord as his general. It turns out necromancer lords are allergic to Black Orc Warbosses. Who knew? Ultimately, my plan was to wipe out his general and back up necromancer. With Orcs, that wasn't so hard. We called it quits in turn 4, as I still had most of my army alive, and he'd lost a chunk of units and both necromancers. That'll do, Orcs. That'll do. <br />
<br />
<i>(Andy Lawhammer and I prevailed upon him to use the vampire rules to represent his character (Eichengard) as it's a better fit. Eichengard is tough, a skilled fighter, and rubbish at magic. A rock hard vampire with level 1 necromancy is a much better fit than a level 4 necromancer who is squishier than a marshmallow.)</i><br />

So, to the second game.<br />
<br />
As we are still taking a while to play (though we are getting slowly faster, if that makes sense), we decided to make our next game a threeway (steady now!) using the battle royale scenario.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Would it be gauche to mention the lack of a Cathay/Nippon GW army?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We diced off, with Waaaagh Morthang forced to deploy in the middle, the Nulners on one flank and the Restless Dead on the other. I made the decision to focus on Nuln first, as my orcs hadn't eaten any 'oomies for a while, and I knew that if I got bogged down in the undead army, the Empire would fire their cannons and handguns at us both to devastating effect.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9KyCRNZaVJcHzg83wKsWtmVR98UjwQlfxEjk94iiBSivF8Pwq0R3rTWE6M6QmUrBbC8licsg-hqh3RAWltF_LsqQBhS2QP4gsyuRRqGdjXw1NnCzVu52FWfZA2D0c7IhD13gb2ZHGx5k/s1600/chopping+trees+down+happy+orc.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9KyCRNZaVJcHzg83wKsWtmVR98UjwQlfxEjk94iiBSivF8Pwq0R3rTWE6M6QmUrBbC8licsg-hqh3RAWltF_LsqQBhS2QP4gsyuRRqGdjXw1NnCzVu52FWfZA2D0c7IhD13gb2ZHGx5k/s320/chopping+trees+down+happy+orc.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm hungry for manflesh. Oooer, fnar fnar!<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While my orcs did rout the Imperials, it was at devastating cost. My Warlord fell to the Imperial General: Black Orc and Wyvern both underperformed, and the lack of a ward save / anything more than heavy armour meant he fell too easily.<br />
<br />
Ultimately, I could only put up a token resistance to the undead, and our final VPs (based on generals, and objectives held) were Undead 3, Orcs 2, Empire 1. If the Wyvern had rolled more than one on his Thunderstomp Morthang would have lived and I'd have got a tie. Still, such are the vagaries of fate!<br />
<br />
<b>Lessons Learned</b><br />
So the games gave me a few things to think about.<br />
<br />
Firstly, I need to bulk up my units, especially my Orcs, Savage Orcs and Boar Boyz.<br />
<br />
Secondly, I need a couple more characters, including a beefier Savage Orc and a Battle Standard Bearer.<br />
<br />
Thirdly, if I'm playing undead, I need a few magic items. Stinking Ethereal units.<br />
<br />
I've ordered some more troops, but I have movement on the characters already. Ladles and jellyspoons, I present...Big Toof.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Big Toof. Waaagh and what not.</td></tr>

<br />
This is another Avatar of War miniature and I love it almost as much as the shaman. Almost. I did a SHOCKING job on the mould lines, but I tried to make up for that with some more elaborate warpaint. This guy will go with Skargutz's Boyz, giving them a bit more oomph (and, against the Undead, having a cheap magic weapon to let him wade into those stinking ethereal units). <br />
<br />
I am looking forward to seeing how he gets on.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I'll be picking up the annoying second shaman model, which I'll be converting to a battle standard bearer, thanks to some Undead bits and bobs given to me by Andrew B.<br />
<br />
So that's all for now. The army continues to take shape, and with our first crushing victory I can feel the Waaagh energy growing!Vonbloodbathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07301222468047181564noreply@blogger.com3
